Solo is a supported mode, not a workaround. Steam lists Single-player. The PlayStation page lists one player and says online play is optional. An older roadmap post discusses pausing private games. Current pause behaviour, offline startup and save/resume were not tested here; solo support alone does not establish those features.
An editorial starting point is Lavernock on a comfortable difficulty, with a refillable weapon and survivability Miracles. Higher difficulty can increase XP but also adds pressure; no required Nightmare loadout or completion-time promise is supported by these sources.

Questions people ask
Does solo scale?
Wales Interactive and the Epic page say the game is designed for solo or up to four players online, and that horde intensity scales with player count. No exact spawn-count formula is supplied. Boss health scaling is not separately documented.
Is solo harder?
PlayStation Universe (PSU)'s review said solo is clearly harder because every main objective is yours. The scaling does not remove the errands.
Can two people play on one console?
Not on one screen. Steam does not list shared or split screen. Two players means two copies online. See crossplay for the party code.
